Tactile Learning website banner

Welcome to my web page

I have created this web site at the encouragement of my peers to make available various projects and activities that I used in teaching science to students with visual impairments and other disabilities. Ben Wentworth Following retirement from the military, I taught science in a regular junior high for five years. I finished my classroom teaching career May 2003, teaching science and history to visually impaired students at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. Meeting the challenges of making sighted science activities meaningful to students with visual impairments has blessed me with the honor of receiving a Toyota TAPESTRY Teacher Grant through NSTA in 1999 and being selected as the Disney Outstanding of the Year for 2001. Please visit the following web sites to see how you too can apply for a TAPESTRY Grant ( http://nsta.org/programs/tapestry/ ) and nominate an outstanding teacher for recognition ( http://disney.go.com/disneylearning/ata/ ).

Although leaving the classroom, I have not left education. I am presently working as a low-vision consultant with DePaul University and NASA with the Touch the Universe Project ( http://analyzer.depaul.edu/ttu/ ) and the Space Exploration Experience Project for the Blind and Visually Impaired ( http://analyzer.depaul.edu/SEE_Project/ ). I also do low-vision consulting with McREL and NASA tactually adapting science modules for the Genesis Mission Project ( http://www.genesismission.org/ace/index.asp ). Recently, I have joined the Teacher Design Collaborative group with Touch Graphics Inc. to create graphics and programs for the Talking Tactile Tablet ( http://touchgraphics.com/ ). I hope you find material you can use from the above sites and this one as it continues to grow. Benning L. Wentworth III
